Shocked and Scared Gonzaga HC Mark Few Comments on Official

The Elite Eight sport between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and USC Trojans skilled a scary second as a referee collapsed throughout the first half. But fortunately, the March Madness official is now in secure situation and was changed by a standby referee as the sport went on. 

The incident occurred throughout the first half of the Elite Eight matchup between Gonzaga and USC on the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Veteran referee Bert Smith immediately collapsed on the sideline when the Trojans had possession of the ball simply 5 minutes into the primary half of the sport. 

Smith hit his head on the ground and laid face first because the March Madness sport instantly got here to a halt. He was standing in entrance of Gonzaga’s bench and medical officers instantly rushed to the spot and commenced offering remedy after he took the autumn. 


Smith obtained on-court remedy for 5 minutes whereas each groups moved to their respective benches. Although the reason for his collapse has not been revealed, TBS broadcast guidelines analyst Gene Steratore talked about that Smith was feeling “lightheaded” earlier than the incident. 

Bert Smith stood up and positioned himself on a stretcher after receiving on-court remedy. However, Smith didn’t return to officiate the sport even after returning to a secure situation.

It was undoubtedly a worrying second when Bert Smith collapsed throughout the sport. Both groups on the ground have been in shock, and March Madness took a short pause till Smith was stretchered off the ground. 


As the sport resumed, the Gonzaga Bulldogs sealed victory over USC and superior to the Final Four. However, Bert Smith’s well being was crucial factor for Mark Few within the post-game press convention after his group gained 85-66 over the Trojans. 

“He’s a great official, great person. I mean, I was just shocked and scared for him, but I was able to stick my head in there a little bit and see that he was talking and coherent and tried to say a quick prayer for him and just wished him the best,” Bulldogs’ head coach Mark Few expressed.

Everyone on the Lucas Oil stadium stood in solidarity with Bert Smith after he collapsed on the ground. They all waited for him to get again to his toes. It was solely after he did in order that the stadium sighed a breath of reduction. 

At the tip of the day, Gonzaga wasn’t disrupted from its title run and booked a spot within the Final Four of the 2021 March Madness!
